Wedding Ring Colors and What They Mean

4 min read

Updated November 2026

Short answer: there are no fixed rules, but colors carry common associations: black suggests elegance and strength, blue calm and fidelity, red love and passion, green nature and growth, and gold tradition and value. At The Artisan Rings, blue is the most popular accent color, and about half of the rings our customers buy include black.

Ring colors at a glance

Common associations in Europe and the US. A ring means what the two of you decide it means.

What does a black wedding ring mean?

Black is the color most associated with elegance in Europe and the United States, and it has long been worn to signal authority and formality. On a ring, it reads as bold, modern and understated at the same time. Many men choose black because it stands out without looking flashy, and it pairs well with wood, carbon fiber and colored stripes.

Most black tungsten rings get their color from plating, while black ceramic is black all the way through. Shop Black Wedding Bands.

Blue: our most popular color

Blue is the color both men and women are most likely to name as their favorite in the US and Europe, and surveys link it with harmony, confidence and calm. It also has a wedding tradition of its own: in the "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" rhyme, blue is a sign of purity and fidelity. That may be why blue is the best-selling accent at our store, from all-blue bands to black rings with a blue stripe.

Rose gold and yellow gold

Gold has stood for value and lasting commitment for centuries, which is why it's the traditional wedding band. Yellow gold looks classic and warm; rose gold has a softer, pinkish tone that many couples see as romantic. With gold-tone tungsten you get the look at a fraction of the price, though the color is plating and can wear over time.

Silver and gray

Natural tungsten carbide is a silver-gray metal. It's the most classic choice, it goes with everything, and because there's no plating, the color never changes. Choose a high polish for shine or a brushed finish for a softer look.

Red, green, purple and orange

Bright accents are usually a thin stripe or groove on a black or silver band. Red is the color most associated with love and passion, and also with courage. Green is most associated with nature, life and hope. Purple and orange are less common, which is exactly why some people choose them.

Wood and natural colors

Wood, antler, opal and shell bring color from nature: warm browns, creamy whites and bright blues and greens. They're a favorite of outdoor lovers and anyone who wants a ring that feels personal. Learn more in our Ring Inlay Guide.

How to choose a color

  • Start with what you wear. A watch, belt buckle or glasses in black, silver or gold is a good hint.
  • Think about daily wear. Natural silver tungsten and black ceramic keep their color for life; plated colors can show wear on the edges after years of hard use.
  • Match or contrast. Couples often share a style in two colors, or pick the same accent color on different widths.
  • Make it yours. Add a date or a few words inside with our free laser engraving.

Frequently asked questions

What does a black wedding ring mean?

There's no fixed meaning. Black is the color most associated with elegance in Europe and the US, and many people choose a black band because it looks bold, modern and masculine. For many couples it simply means a ring that matches their style.

Is a black wedding ring bad luck?

No. There's no wedding tradition that treats a black band as bad luck. It's a style choice, and about half of the rings our customers buy include black.

What color wedding band is most popular?

At The Artisan Rings, blue: about 30% of rings sold over the last two years had blue as the main accent, followed by black, wood and natural inlays, and classic silver and gray.

Will a colored ring fade?

Natural silver tungsten and black ceramic keep their color, because the color is the material. Black, blue and gold tungsten get their color from plating, which can wear on the edges over years of hard use. See Do Tungsten Rings Rust, Tarnish or Fade?

Can couples wear different colors?

Yes. Many of our designs come in several colors and widths, so you can share a style and pick a color each, for example black for him and rose gold for her.
