Men's Wedding Band Widths: 2mm to 12mm Compared

4 min read

Short answer: most men's wedding bands are 6mm to 8mm wide, and 8mm is the single most popular width at The Artisan Rings: 68% of the 1,319 rings our customers bought over the last two years (where the width was recorded) were 8mm, and another 18% were 6mm. Women's bands are usually 4mm or narrower. Wider bands feel tighter in the same ring size, so width and size should be chosen together.

Wedding band widths at a glance

Width is measured across the top of the band, from one edge to the other. Each 2mm step is easy to see on the hand: a 4mm band reads as slim, 8mm as bold, and 12mm as a statement ring.

Width Look Often chosen for
2mm Very slim, minimal Stacking, women's bands, very slim fingers
4mm Slim and understated Women's bands, slim fingers, a partner ring that matches a wider men's band
6mm Balanced, medium profile Average hands, a classic look; our second most popular width
8mm Bold but classic Most men; the width two thirds of our customers choose
10mm Wide and noticeable Larger hands and longer fingers; room for inlays and engraving
12mm+ Statement A bold look; detailed engraving and scenic designs

How to choose the right width

  • Look at your hand. The same width looks different on different hands. Brilliant Earth notes that a width that looks balanced on one hand can look heavy on another, so the best width is the one that looks and feels right on yours.
  • Think about how you use your hands. A wider band covers more of the finger. If you grip tools, lift weights or type all day, a 6mm or 8mm comfort fit band is often easier to live with than 12mm.
  • Consider the style. Inlays, grooves and engraving need room. Wood, opal and carbon fiber inlays show best at 6mm and above, and scenic engraving suits 10mm and 12mm bands.
  • Match, or don't. Many of our designs come in several widths, so partners can share one style in two widths, for example 8mm and 4mm. See our Wedding Ring Sets.

How width affects fit

A wider band touches more of the finger, so it feels tighter than a narrower band in the same size. That's why wide bands need a different sizing rule from narrow ones. The shape of the inside matters too.

Standard fit bands have a flat inside. Comfort fit bands have a rounded inside that slides over the knuckle more easily; comfort fit is the usual choice for tungsten, ceramic and titanium rings.

Our sizing advice, from our Ring Sizing guide:

  • If you measured with our $4.99 adjustable ring sizer, order the exact size it shows.
  • If a jeweler measured you with standard fit sizers, order comfort fit bands of 8mm or narrower a half size smaller.
  • For comfort fit bands wider than 8mm, don't size down: wide bands fit tighter.

Size matters more with tungsten than with gold, because tungsten carbide can't be resized. If you're unsure, the ring sizer is the cheapest way to avoid an exchange.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular wedding band width for men?

8mm. At The Artisan Rings, 68% of rings sold over the last two years were 8mm and 18% were 6mm. Brilliant Earth reports that 5mm to 6mm is most popular for precious-metal men's bands, so alternative-metal buyers tend to go a little wider.

Is 8mm too wide?

For most men, no: it is the width most of our customers choose. If you have slim fingers or smaller hands, compare 6mm and 8mm before you decide.

Do wider rings fit tighter?

Yes. A wider band covers more of the finger, so it feels snugger in the same size. For comfort fit bands wider than 8mm, order your measured size rather than a half size smaller.

What width is a women's wedding band?

Usually 4mm or under, with 2mm to 3mm the most popular, according to Brilliant Earth. Our Women's Wedding Bands run from 2mm to 12mm.

Can couples wear different widths of the same ring?

Yes. Many of our designs are made in several widths, so you can pick one style and choose a width for each person.

Why Tungsten Is Popular For Affordable Wedding Rings

Tungsten rings are more affordable than rings made from precious metals like gold or platinum. This is primarily because tungsten is a more abundant resource, and the manufacturing process is less complicated.
