Tungsten vs Gold Wedding Bands: Hardness, Weight and Price Compared
5 min read
Updated November 2026
Short answer: tungsten carbide is far harder than gold (about 9 to 9.5 on the Mohs scale, against 2.5 for pure gold), so it resists scratches much better and costs a fraction of the price. Gold is softer but can be resized and repaired, and it keeps its value as a precious metal. A tungsten ring weighs about the same as an 18K gold ring and noticeably more than 14K.

Hardness and scratch resistance
Hardness is where the two metals differ most. Wedding bands sold as "tungsten" are tungsten carbide: tungsten bonded with carbon and held together by a metal binder. It rates about 9 to 9.5 on the Mohs scale and is roughly 10 times harder than 18K gold (Wikipedia, Tungsten carbide). Pure gold rates 2.5 (Wikipedia, Gold).

In practice, a tungsten band keeps its polish through years of daily wear, while a gold band slowly picks up fine scratches and needs polishing from time to time. Only harder materials, such as diamond or ceramic abrasives, will scratch tungsten carbide.
The trade-off is brittleness. Gold bends and dents; tungsten carbide doesn't bend, but a sharp knock against stone or tile can crack it. Read more in Why do tungsten rings break?
Is tungsten heavier than gold?
It depends on the gold. Tungsten carbide has a density of 15.6 g/cm³ (Wikipedia). That's about the same as 18K yellow gold (about 15.5) and roughly 20% more than 14K gold (about 12.9), so a tungsten band feels heavier than a 14K band of the same size. Pure 24K gold is denser still, at 19.3 g/cm³, but it's too soft for everyday rings.

Price
Most tungsten rings cost between $50 and $300 (Jewelers Mutual, 2025). At The Artisan Rings the median tungsten band costs about $120, with free laser engraving. Our 8mm 14K gold bands start at about $790, and most cost $1,000 or more. For context, the average American spends about $600 on a men's wedding band (The Knot 2023 Jewelry & Engagement Study).

Gold's price reflects the metal itself, which is why a gold ring keeps much of its value. Tungsten carbide has little resale value: you're paying for the ring, not the metal.
Resizing and repairs
A jeweler can usually resize a gold band by cutting and adding or removing metal. Tungsten carbide can't be resized (Jewelers Mutual, 2025), so getting the size right before you order matters more. Our Ring Sizing guide and width guide explain how to choose, and our $4.99 ring sizer is the easiest way to be sure.
Can a tungsten ring be removed in an emergency?
Yes. A ring cutter that saws through gold won't cut tungsten carbide, but emergency staff can crack it off. In a 2013 study in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine, locking pliers removed a tungsten ring in an average of 23.1 seconds, and a non-destructive string method also worked in every trial (Gardiner et al., 2013).
Skin sensitivity
Tungsten carbide jewelry is held together by a metal binder, usually cobalt or nickel (Wikipedia). Our tungsten carbide rings use a nickel binder (about 15%) instead of cobalt, so they're cobalt-free. Most people wear them with no reaction at all; if you have a diagnosed nickel allergy, contact us before ordering. Karat gold is also an alloy: 14K yellow gold is about 58% gold, with the rest mostly silver and copper (CAMEO, MFA Boston).
Gold-tone tungsten: a middle ground
If you like the look of gold but want tungsten's hardness and price, a gold-plated tungsten band gives you a gold color over a tungsten carbide core. The plating is a thin surface layer, so it can show wear over time, especially on the inside and edges. See How long does gold-plated tungsten last?
Which should you choose?
Choose tungsten if you want a ring that stays scratch-free, you work with your hands, and you'd rather spend under $200.
Choose gold if you want a precious metal that can be resized, repaired and passed down, and the higher price fits your budget.
Choose gold-tone tungsten if you want the gold color at a tungsten price and accept that plating can wear.
Yes, much harder. Tungsten carbide rates about 9 to 9.5 on the Mohs scale and pure gold 2.5, and tungsten carbide is roughly 10 times harder than 18K gold (Wikipedia).
Is tungsten heavier than gold?
Heavier than 14K gold, about the same as 18K gold, and lighter than pure 24K gold.
Is tungsten more expensive than gold?
No. A tungsten band typically costs $50 to $300; a solid gold band usually costs several times more.
Does tungsten tarnish like gold?
Tungsten carbide doesn't tarnish in everyday wear. Solid gold doesn't tarnish either, though lower-karat alloys can dull over time. Plated colors on either metal can wear.
Can tungsten be resized?
No. Order the right size from the start, or use our ring sizer first.

I’m so happy with my purchase! The ring is absolutely beautiful and the quality is exceptional. The engraving on the inside is very well done, with great attention to detail.
The size I originally chose didn’t quite fit, so I contacted them to arrange an exchange. Their customer service was excellent, and the whole process was incredibly simple and easy, even from Quebec, Canada.
Shipping was also very fast. It was a wonderful experience from start to finish, and the level of service really inspires confidence. I would absolutely recommend them! ❤️
I really like the look and quality of this ring. The black and acid green finish looks great, and it feels well made. Unfortunately, the sizing didn't work out for me. I had my finger and old ring professionally measured by a jeweler, who recommended going from an 11(my old ring size) to a 10.5. Even with that adjustment, the ring is still noticeably too big.
I reached out to customer service by email to ask about my options, but I never received a response. The only email I received afterward was a request to leave a review, which was disappointing.
Overall, I think it's a nice looking, well made ring, but the lack of customer service makes it difficult to recommend as a 5 star if you have any sizing issues.
Everything about the ring, the ordering and shipping process was fantastic. Good communication throughout the whole experience and the quality is amazing. Would happily recommend to anyone! And my husband approves- even better!
