Do Tungsten Rings Rust, Tarnish or Fade? What to Expect

Updated November 2026

Short answer: tungsten rings don't rust, and they don't tarnish in everyday wear. A natural silver or gray tungsten carbide ring keeps its color for life. The one thing that can change is a plated color: black, blue, gold and rose gold tungsten rings get their color from a thin coating that can slowly wear on the edges after years of hard use.

Rust
No
Tungsten carbide has no iron, so it can't rust.
Tarnish
Not in daily wear
Chlorine, bleach and strong chemicals can dull it.
Fade
Plated colors only
Black, blue and gold plating can wear on edges over time.

What a tungsten ring is made of

A tungsten ring isn't pure tungsten. It's tungsten carbide, a very hard compound of tungsten and carbon, held together by a small amount of metal binder, usually cobalt or nickel (Wikipedia). Our tungsten carbide rings use a nickel binder (about 15%) instead of cobalt, so they're cobalt-free.

The binder matters because it's the part that corrosion attacks, not the carbide. In lab tests in salt water, the binder dissolved first while the carbide grains were untouched, and a nickel-based binder resisted corrosion better than cobalt (Materials Research). That's one reason we use a nickel binder.

Do tungsten rings rust?

No. Rust is iron oxide, and tungsten carbide contains no iron. Tungsten carbide only starts to oxidize in air at around 630°C (about 1,170°F) (Obrabotka Metallov), far hotter than anything a ring meets in daily life. Water, sweat, rain and showers won't rust it.

Do tungsten rings tarnish?

Not in normal wear. Silver tarnishes because it reacts with sulfur in the air; tungsten carbide doesn't. What can dull the surface is long or repeated contact with harsh chemicals that attack the binder: chlorine in pools and hot tubs, bleach, strong household cleaners and acids. Take your ring off before you swim or clean, and it will keep its shine.

Do black and colored tungsten rings fade?

Natural tungsten carbide is silver-gray. Black, blue, gold and rose gold tungsten rings get their color from IP (ion plating), a thin, hard coating bonded to the surface. It's much tougher than paint and lasts for years, but it isn't the full thickness of the ring. With a lot of friction, it wears first on the edges and high points, where a little of the gray metal can start to show.

Why plated tungsten colors can fade A plated tungsten ring has a thin color layer over gray tungsten carbide; it wears first on the edges and high points, showing the gray metal underneath. Silver tungsten and black ceramic have the same color all the way through, so there is nothing to wear off.Plated ringTungsten carbideThin color layer wearsfirst on the edgesSolid colorSilvertungstenBlackceramicNothing to wear off:same color throughout

How fast that happens depends on how you use your hands. Lifting weights, gripping tools and rubbing against concrete or sand wear plating much faster than desk work. If you want a dark ring with no coating to wear, consider black ceramic, which is black all the way through. If you want a ring that never changes color, choose a natural silver or gray tungsten finish.

How to keep your ring looking new

Do
✓ Warm water and mild dish soap
✓ A soft brush, then dry with a cloth
✓ Take it off for the gym and heavy work
✓ Store it apart from other jewelry
Avoid
✕ Chlorine pools and hot tubs
✕ Bleach and strong cleaners
✕ Acids and harsh solvents
✕ Rubbing on concrete, sand or metal

Soak the ring for a few minutes in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, brush it gently with a soft toothbrush, rinse and dry it with a soft cloth. Skip vinegar, bleach and other strong cleaners. Store it on its own so harder rings and gemstones don't rub against plated surfaces.

Can a tungsten ring break?

Tungsten carbide is extremely scratch resistant, but it's also brittle: a hard, sharp impact against stone or metal can crack it, where a gold ring would bend. It can't be resized either. Our Lifetime Warranty replaces a damaged ring free in the first year and for a $45 deductible after that; normal wear and scratches aren't covered. Frequently asked questions

Can I shower and swim with a tungsten ring?

Showering is fine, and fresh or salt water won't rust it. Take it off before chlorinated pools and hot tubs, since chlorine can dull the surface and wear plated colors faster.

Will my black tungsten ring turn silver?

Not quickly. Black plating lasts for years with normal wear. After a lot of friction, the edges may show some gray metal underneath. Black ceramic rings don't have this issue, because the color goes all the way through.

Does tungsten turn your finger green?

No. A green mark usually comes from copper in cheaper jewelry. Tungsten carbide isn't a copper alloy.

Are tungsten rings safe for sensitive skin?

Our tungsten carbide rings are cobalt-free and most people wear them with no reaction at all. They do contain a nickel binder, so if you have a diagnosed nickel allergy, contact us before ordering.

How do I clean a tungsten ring?

Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth.
